Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend, a video piece and a series of live performances between 2012-2015

Caption from 2012: Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. In the movie number "Diamonds are a Girls Best friend" performed by Marilyn Monroe in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" Marilyn's character displays what Pamela Robertson refers to as the feminist camp in her book "Guilty Pleasures: the Feminist Camp from Mae West to Madonna". Lorelei Lee- Marilyn's character, embraces the gold digging life style and indulges in glamour and the luxury of diamonds and expensive things. While she has male dancers on stage following her around, there are also female dancers who have been reduced to objects and hung from the ceiling in unusual bondage chandelier outfits. Although this film has its problems, it presents many examples of strong females and strong female relationships and I choose to read it as a feminist film. Madonna performed in drag as Marilyn in her music video "Material Girl" but chooses to have an underlying story line that informs the viewer that she is not interested in material objects in the same way that Lorelei Lee is. In this video I am performing in drag as both Marilyn and Madonna, using techniques of drag performance lip syncing. I am also interested in female drag queens lip syncing songs sung my a male voice. I am also looking at the juxtaposition between the femininity and glamour of diamonds and jewelry presented in "Diamonds are a Girl's Best friend" compared to the hyper masculin attitude to jewelry, diamonds and bling in hip hop culture.
